IoT & Computer Vision: Object Detection and Social Distancing
The Sparks Foundation · GRIP Internship
01
Problem
Needed hands-on, deadline-bound delivery of applied computer-vision systems across image datasets, run concurrently with a separate data-science internship track.
02
Challenge
Execute multiple discrete CV projects—object detection/OCR, a social-distancing detector, and color identification—within a compressed internship timeline.
03
Solution
Delivered object detection/OCR, a social-distancing detector, and color identification in images across different datasets, working concurrently with the Data Science & Business Analytics internship track.
04
Impact
Completed all assigned projects on deadline, reinforcing practical computer-vision skills that fed directly into the federated learning + object detection MSc dissertation and NxtPerson's crop-grading CV roadmap.
Approach
- 01
Selected and prepared datasets appropriate to each CV task—object detection, OCR, and color classification.
- 02
Implemented an object detection / OCR pipeline and validated output against labeled samples.
- 03
Built a social-distancing detector using distance estimation between detected people in frame.
- 04
Documented each project's approach and results for internship review under GRIP's rotational structure.
Outcomes
- Three distinct CV projects delivered within a 3-month internship window
- Object detection/OCR, social-distancing detection, and color identification systems, each validated against test data
- Practical CV foundation carried forward into the MSc dissertation and NxtPerson's roadmap
- Demonstrated ability to run parallel technical tracks under deadline pressure
